Blah Pt. 2

The boys finally finished cleaning their rooms yesterday, so we went to the beach. We decided to go and figured the only thing better than the beach on a nice afternoon is the beach on a nice afternoon with friends, so we invited Sandy and her bunch. We came home, had dinner and then watched the fireworks on TV.

When I say "mess" I don't mean mess like CPS would take my kids if they did a surprise visit. I don't even mean mess like if a friend stopped by unannounced I would be embarrassed. (Although there are certainly times when I would grab the car keys and suggest we take the kids to a park instead.)

I just can't stand clutter and one of the problems with decluttering is that the clutter gets a lot worse at first! We have boxes waiting to go to the thrift store, a few boxes waiting to go to the garage for storage (see The Organization Map by Pam Mc Clellan for a great idea on how to store rarely used items.) I am realizing that I don't need to keep half of the things I thought I did.

I don't understand this constant need of my kids to posses things. Anything. It doesn't matter what it is or what they would ever do with it. They just have to posses it.

To Anonymous:
Thank you for the great ideas. Hopefully I can convince my kids they don't need all of this crap they try to keep. (Christian has piles of scrap wood in his room to use for his "projects." Alex saves every piece of paper he comes into contact with. Ethan couldn't put clothes away to save his life!)

It also doesn't help that we now live in a house that is the size of one of the three storeys of our old house. I like my smaller house and wouldn't trade it for the 5-bedroom beast we used to own, but trying to convince everyone that we don't need the same amount of *stuff* we used to has been a challenge.

Well, we are off to a birthday party, and then I am coming home to start dinner for everyone while I head to Mom's Night Out!
